Checklists for your cycling vacation

Anyone planning a long-distance cycle tour or a longer cycling vacation in Germany should be well prepared. Here is a checklist for preparing for the tour and a packing list:

Checklist for preparing a cycling vacation:

  1. Bike check: Are the brakes, gears and lights working? Can the tires be inflated once and won't they lose air, e.g. overnight? Are the bike basket or luggage rack secure? Is the bicycle helmet in place? Also make sure you have a secure lock to secure the bike during the tour.
  2. Plan your route: Which routes do you want to take, and are they suitable for your ability level? Which sights or rest stops are on the route?
  3. Navigation & power bank: Is there a functioning GPS device and/or a map specifically for cycle paths? There are now also bicycle dynamo chargers that you can use to charge your cell phone while riding. It is also a good idea to download offline maps before your trip.
  4. Travel insurance: Have you taken out travel insurance that includes breakdown assistance?
  5. Accommodation: Have you booked accommodation for the stopovers or as a base for your cycling vacation? Early booking is recommended, especially in the high season.
  6. Training: If you have not cycled for a long time, start with shorter tours in good time to improve your stamina. Try riding with luggage to get used to the new riding experience.
